comp video of hawk 161524, 122142 and owl(2 vids of May 8 1 vid May 24)
I live in Worcester, Massachusetts which is an ideal haven for mid-life parents to raise a family. When we first moved here I created a sanctuary in our back yard for birds because I wanted to be able to watch them frolic and nest while eating breakfast each morning. For 2 years my plan worked but one day a cooper’s hawk turned my sanctuary into its own hunting grounds. That’s just how life is. You work hard and build but eventually the fruit of your labor gets stolen or destroyed.
Let’s ask ourselves about how this is true with our finances. As we can see in the first video clip, a hawk is being pestered by a small finch. This aggressive little guy just keeps attacking but the hawk isn’t too worried. It actually seems like it’s ignoring the offensive that’s mounted against it. But later we see that the persistence of the little bird pays off and the hawk flies away. The same goes for the second clip with the little blue jay. The racket is non stop as the blue jay and his pals try to scare off an owl. These small, combined assaults on the owl would have continued all day had I not scared the owl off with my camera.
Let’s ask ourselves about how the principle of the two birds can be applied to our finances. Being vigilant and consistent against debt and the emergencies that cause debt can go a long way. To give a real life example of my own, here in Worcester, Massachusetts the recession of 2008 was really bad and my husband lost his job like so many others. We had to learn to do without our usual comforts for about 8 months until he found another job. As I look back on that miserable situation I can say that it had an obvious silver lining. It forced me to think out of the box and create income in some unusual ways.
During my learning phase my first two business ideas did bring in a little money but have since fizzled out. My third thrust into entrepreneurship took off and has provided us with a substantial nest egg for another recession and/or retirement. This helpful income stream is online based and that’s as far as I’ll go into detail about it. But I will say that it is an online help forum which fits into a lesser known niche. As we ponder this evolution for the better in my own family, it’s less unnerving to imagine the different kinds of “hawks” in life which come to kill, steal and destroy. I’ll write a list of some of them below.
As I said, these are just a few major things I can think of. Since we’re just human there’s no way to be free from these kinds of emergencies. But we can be like the little birds in the video that remain vigilant and work consistently to protect their territory. So the big question I can pose to this readership is, “Why wait for an emergency to start a side business?” Doing something now may prove to be vital in the future, keeping you out of debt and utter ruin. When faced with daunting news or lack of progress, keep at it and your persistence will reward you.
