I had a friend named Jim whose wife died from a chronic illness. He had been living in Japan and the tragedy left him unable to continue his responsibilities. So he returned to the US to get back on his feet and discovered that at 55 years of age, it was a real challenge. He had himself and two kids to feed so he was willing to take any job to put food on the table. His situation in the US stayed miserable for months until one day he got a call from a friend in Japan. His friend told Jim that he wasn’t getting any younger and that he needed to get a substantial job. During that phone call, his friend offered him a high level position at a pharmaceutical company. He said that he knew no one else who was honest and reliable in the US so Jim kind of got the job by default. That was Jim’s turning point. To make the story sweeter, a year later he met another woman and eventually ended up marrying her.
Anyway, the rule with rich international people is that they always have business tentacles outside of their country. If they know you have integrity, they won’t hesitate to call you if they have to get something done (ex. receive a package, personally check on an office situation, mediate between a company and the government). I knew of a guy who would act as a courier when there was an emergency. He would accept an important package, get on an airplane and deliver the package to someone waiting at his destination. It was like a mini vacation with a huge thank you payment attached. You can expect good financial compensation for any service you do for international businessmen because not getting these things done usually means death to them. There are also opportunities for passive income because you just have to be in a certain geography to be an invaluable resource.
I’m not saying that you should make a concerted effort to target international people for friendships. It’s far better to just be open and make yourself available to everyone in social situations. This cross-pollination is good for life and having friends will get you farther than going at it alone. Let’s continue along this vein. I have a friend that had a chance encounter with a German businessman. After talking a while, my friend let out that he was considering moving back to China to spend the rest of his life there. Then the bells went off! It turns out that the German had invented a static free phone shield that needed to be promoted in China. This was a golden opportunity for my friend because when a store puts in an order, it tends to go into auto drive and continue buying to keep the shelves filled. This is another great example of how passive income can change your life like a dynamo.
